Each chapter is a story. The stories range from the 1950's to Obama's first election. Told by multiple characters with distinct voices, each evoking their own vision of the times and events, the stories gradually weave together to form an overarching storyline. While at times the pace was a bit slow for my taste, the intricate pattern created by telling the story this way was impressive.
